Moving a team is a project, not a decision. Done in the wrong order it costs you production and agents; done well, most teams barely lose a beat.
Here is the sequence experienced leaders use.
Before you tell anyone
Model the economics for each production tier on your team, read your current agreements, and know your answer to the three questions every agent will ask: why, what changes for me, and what happens to my pendings.
- Economics modeled for low, mid, and high producers
- Independent contractor agreements and any team agreements reviewed
- Pending transaction plan confirmed with both brokerages
- Your written reason for the move, in plain language
Agent conversations
Talk to your core producers individually and first. Lead with what improves for them, be honest about what does not, and give them room to decide rather than pressure.
Agents forgive a hard change. They do not forgive being handled.
Operations and marketing
Sequence the operational work so nothing goes dark: licensing transfers, CRM and lead routing, signage and marketing assets, transaction coordination, and client communication.
- License transfer timing for each team member
- CRM, lead sources, and follow-up automation
- Signage, listing marketing, and portal profiles
- Client and vendor notification script
The first 30 days after
Protect production. Keep the prospecting calendar identical, run your normal meetings, and put onboarding on a schedule rather than leaving it to each agent's free time.
Honest considerations
- •Expect a short productivity dip and plan for it.
- •Some agents will stay behind; that is normal.
- •Have legal and licensing questions reviewed by professionals.
Where Team Legacy fits
This is exactly the kind of transition we help leaders sequence — quietly, with checklists, and with the goal of not losing a single closing in the process.
Our positioning is simple: build a real estate business that fits your life, not a life that fits your real estate business. See what that looks like in practice.

Frequently asked questions
What happens to pending transactions when a team changes brokerages?
Pendings are typically completed under the current brokerage or transferred by agreement. Confirm the handling in writing with both brokerages before you announce.
How long does a team move take?
Most teams plan two to six weeks from decision to fully operational, depending on team size and pending volume.
When should I tell my agents?
Talk to core producers individually before any group announcement, and give them time to ask questions privately.
